Moscow warned Ankara this Tuesday that no one in Europe wants to see Turkey in the European Union (EU) after Brussels cleared the way for the exchange of that accession for Sweden’s NATO membership.
“Turkey may be oriented to the west. We know that in the history of the Republic of Turkey there have been periods of intense orientation to the west. But we also know very well that (…) no one wants to see Turkey in Europe “, said Kremin’s door spokesman, Dmitri Peskov.
The spokesman advised Turkish authorities not to view this situation with “pink glasses”, recalling that the possibility of Turkey joining the EU is a distant reality, despite Ankara giving the green light for Sweden’s entry into NATO .
“Despite all the differences that are already known, we intend to continue our dialogue and relations with the Republic of Turkey,” explained Peskov, quoted by the Russian agency TASS.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday called on the EU to speed up Turkey’s accession process as a condition of Sweden’s admission to NATO, breaking a complex stalemate in the Atlantic Alliance.
