Russia accuses European countries of protecting Nord Stream sabotage perpetrators

“The inaction of the European authorities can only be explained in one way: efforts to stop (the investigation) in order to cover up those who are really responsible for the crime,” said Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations (UN). ), Vasily Nebenzya, at a meeting of the Security Council.

“The Russian Federation will continue to bring the Nord Stream sabotage issue to the Council until those responsible are identified and brought to justice,” he insisted.

Russia has convened a meeting of the UN Security Council to criticize the lack of results in national investigations by Denmark, Germany and Sweden into the September 2022 sabotage of the two Nord Stream gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea.

Western countries, however, accused Moscow of using the Security Council as a platform for disinformation after convening three meetings in less than a month to discuss these explosions.

As other diplomats have pointed out, this is the third time in less than a month that Russia has asked the Security Council to discuss the destruction of Nord Stream. Russian attempts to try to use this Council as a platform for disinformation are as cynical as they are transparent,” said U.S. Ambassador Jeffrey DeLaurentis.

To today’s meeting, Moscow invited two journalists who called themselves “independent” and who argued for the existence of “Western complicity” in hiding those responsible for the explosion.

However, several diplomats chose to criticize the regularity with which Russia has convened meetings on the subject, even when the investigation is still ongoing and there is no new factor for discussion.

“We remain confident in the competent and credible investigations underway in Germany, Sweden and Denmark. We thank these countries for their commitment to impartial investigations and for their recent letter to the Council in this regard. Russia’s unfounded concerns about transparency and impartiality investigating this sound as empty as his claims that he had no connection with the Wagner group and had no intention of invading Ukraine,” DeLaurentis said.

France’s ambassador to the UN, Nicolas de Rivière, said it was “a contradiction” that Russia is concerned about critical gas pipeline infrastructure as it attacks Ukrainian infrastructure on a daily basis.

“Instead of convening pipeline meetings and wasting the Council’s time on an ongoing investigative process, Russia could be more useful and productive and withdraw its troops from Ukraine,” said Ferit Hoxha, Albania’s ambassador.

British diplomat James Kariuki revealed that in the recent letter to the Council, Germany, Sweden and Denmark emphasized the complexity of the ongoing investigations and emphasized that this process will take time.

Last March, the Security Council rejected a Russian proposal to launch an international investigation into the explosions, with most members calling for Germany, Denmark and Sweden to continue the investigations.

The attacks on the Nord Stream pipelines, which were not in use at the time of the incident, took place on September 26, 2022 and caused two leaks in each: two in the Danish zone and two in the Swedish zone, all in international waters .
