Six children and four adults, most from the same family, died Wednesday after a house fire in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore, rescuers and police said.
“Two women, two men and six children between the ages of six and 16 lost their lives,” Lahore Police Deputy Inspector General Ali Nasir said.
Ali Nasir said the causes of the fire were still unclear, but police investigators suspect that an electrical short circuit started the fire in the busy Bhati Gate residential area.
In a statement, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his deep sadness at the loss of life.
Smoke detectors and other technologies that can improve fire safety in residential buildings are infrequently used in Pakistan.
Fires in houses and other public spaces like shopping malls are common in Pakistan.
