At least 96 people were arrested in various clashes and 255 vehicles were burned, during the night of the French national holiday, between Friday and Saturday.
Despite the occurrences, reports the Efe agency, this year the number of incidents has decreased by 40% compared to last year.
The French Interior Minister, Gérald Darmanin, has pointed out today on his Twitter account, even with provisional figures, the “significant decrease” in material damage, and has attributed it “to the forces of order, their presence and the numerous controls preventives carried out. out”.
Faced with the risk of a repetition of new riots, identical to those that occurred for a week after the death on the 27th of a young man in the city of Nanterre by a shot by the police, Darmanin decided on a massive mobilization of agents for the national holiday of July 14.
In total, 45,000 police officers took to the streets the night before and on July 14, with seven police officers injured, a lower figure than in 2022, with 21 police officers injured.
There were 51 episodes in which fireworks were used against law enforcement, up from 333 a year ago.
Since June 27 and the start of the riots in sensitive neighborhoods of many French cities, the police had seized around 165,000 mortars, the most feared pyrotechnic items in these attacks.
The festivities on July 14 traditionally end with fireworks. The most popular are those of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, which tens of thousands of people from the surrounding area have seen on the street.
