Tsunami warning following magnitude 7.4 earthquake in Alaska

A magnitude-7.4 earthquake in Alaska prompted authorities to issue a tsunami warning in several regions of the US state this Sunday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 21 kilometers on the Alaska Peninsula, 90 kilometers southwest of the city of Sand Point, at 7:48 a.m. in Lisbon.

A tsunami warning has been issued for southern Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula, according to the National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska.

“Tsunami hazard assessments are currently underway for the Pacific Rim of the United States and Canada,” he added.

Alaska is part of the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire.

In March 1964, Alaska was hit by a magnitude 9.2 earthquake, the strongest ever recorded in North America.

The earthquake then devastated the city of Anchorage and triggered a tsunami that hit the Gulf of Alaska, the west coast of the United States, and Hawaii. The earthquake and tsunami killed more than 250 people.
