Police tighten control over veiled women in public places in Iran

The Iranian police announced this Sunday the reestablishment of patrols to punish the growing number of women who do not wear the veil in public places, 10 months after the death of Mahsa Amini for allegedly inappropriately wearing the ‘hijad’.

“Starting today, the police will warn and punish, through car and foot patrols, people who unfortunately disobey orders and continue to disrespect the dress code,” said police spokesman Saïd Montazeralmahdi, quoted by the tasnim agency.

This announcement comes 10 months after the death, on September 16, 2022, of the 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish Mahsa Amini, detained by the so-called morality police, who accused her of improperly wearing the Islamic headscarf (‘hijad’ ) . .

In recent days, photos and videos, the authenticity of which could not be independently verified, have been posted on social media showing police officers admonishing women who were not wearing a headscarf.

Mahsa Amini’s death sparked a large protest movement, with demonstrations in several cities in October and November.

Several hundred people, including members of the security forces, were killed and thousands arrested. Seven men were executed for their part in this movement.

Discussed by protesters, the morality police have all but disappeared from the streets in recent months, leading more and more women to go bareheaded, especially in Tehran and big cities.
