At least two residents of Russia’s Belgorod region have been killed and a child injured “in an emergency” on the Crimean bridge, Russian authorities announced.
A couple died and their daughter, who suffered minor injuries, will be immediately transported to Belgorod when doctors allow it, Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said.
“In recent days, we have been sending our children to the Crimean camps,” Gladkov said, assuring parents that “nothing endangers the lives” of the children.
The governor of the Crimean peninsula, Sergey Axyonov, annexed by Russia in 2014, reported “an emergency” on the bridge, after at least two explosions were heard and later damage was detected on the road.
“Circulation on the Crimean bridge was suspended: an emergency occurred in the area of the [pilar de] support 145 of the Krasnodar Territory,” said the official, on the Telegram messaging platform.
Russia’s Transport Ministry has acknowledged that there is “road damage to sections of the Crimean Bridge”, which connects the occupied peninsula with Russia, but the pillars are intact, Russian news agency TASS reported.
Locals heard two explosions around 1:04 a.m. and 1:20 a.m. in Lisbon, according to comments on the Russian social network VKontakte, quoted by the EFE news agency.
In October last year, a booby-trapped truck exploded on the bridge, considered the longest in Europe at 19 km, and the jewel in the crown of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Five people were killed in the attack, described by Moscow as a terrorist attack.
