Russian President Vladimir Putin called on Monday to strengthen security measures at the Crimean Bridge, a strategic infrastructure damaged for the second time by a Ukrainian attack to which he has vowed to respond.
“Remembering that this is the second terrorist attack on the Crimean Bridge, I look forward to concrete proposals to improve the security of this important and strategic transport infrastructure”Putin declared during a televised government meeting.
According to the Russian leader, the Ukrainian attack on the 2014-annexed bridge connecting Russia to the Crimea peninsula resulted in one girl being injured and the death of her parents.
“The family went to Crimea from the region [russa] from Belgorod,” he explained in detail.
“There will clearly be a response from Russia. The Defense Ministry is preparing adequate proposals,” he said.
The attack caused extensive road damage to the 11-mile bridge used to deliver supplies to the Russian army in Ukraine.
A Ukrainian security services (SBU) source assured AFP that the attack was staged by Kiev’s special services and naval forces using “naval drones”.
It is “another act of terrorism by the Kiev regime,” Putin stressed.
According to Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Jusnulin, the bridge’s supporting structures were not damaged by the blast, which Putin described as “good news”.
