A UN report concludes that all countries have not committed to gender equality, that women have yet to reach their potential and that gender differences are all too common.
“The international community is committed to gender equality and women’s empowerment. However, from new data, we can clearly see that women in all countries have not yet reached their full potential and that gender differences are common problems,” said UN Women’s Executive Director , Sima Bahous, at the presentation of the report, made in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
Both UN Women and UNDP have introduced two new indices that assess the situation of women in the world and “pave the way for targeted interventions and policy reforms”: the Women’s Empowerment Index (WEI) and the Global Women’s Gender Parity (GGPI).
The WEI assesses women’s power and freedom to make decisions and take advantage of opportunities, while the GGPI examines women’s position relative to men on key human development issues (health, education, inclusion, and decision-making).
In this way, the two UN organizations warned that according to the two new indexes “women are promoted to reach on average only 60% of their total potential” and “they reach 72% in relation to what men can achieve in terms of human development” .
“Continued efforts are needed to deliver on promises of gender equality, to guarantee the human rights of women and girls and to fully safeguard their fundamental freedoms,” Bahous said.
The UN Women and UNDP report was presented this Tuesday in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, on the occasion of the Women Deliver 2023 (WD2023) conference, which runs until next Thursday.
