All countries have failed to commit to full gender equality

A UN report concludes that all countries have not committed to gender equality, that women have yet to reach their potential and that gender differences are all too common.

“The international community is committed to gender equality and the empowerment of women. However, we can clearly see from new data that in all countries women have yet to reach their full potential and gender differences are common problems,” said the UN Executive Director. Women, Sima Bahous, at the presentation of the report, carried out jointly with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

Both UN Women and UNDP have launched two new indices that assess the situation of women in the world and “pave the way for targeted interventions and policy reforms”: the Women’s Empowerment Index (WEI) and Parity Global Gender Index of Women (GGPI).

The WEI assesses women’s power and freedom to make decisions and seize opportunities, while the GGPI examines where women stand relative to men on key human development issues. [saúde, educação, inclusão e tomada de decisões].

In this way, the two UN organizations warned that, according to the two new indices, “women are promoted to reach, on average, only 60% of their total potential” and “they achieve 72% of what they men can achieve in terms of human development.

“Sustained efforts are needed to fulfill the promises of gender equality, guarantee the human rights of women and girls and fully guarantee their fundamental freedoms,” Bahous said.

The report by UN Women and UNDP was presented today in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, on the occasion of the Women Deliver 2023 (WD2023) conference, which will run until next Thursday.
