EU updates list of terrorists subject to sanctions

The Council of the European Union (EU) this Thursday updated the list of people, groups and entities subject to sanctions for terrorism, drawn up in the context of the implementation of a UN Security Council resolution.

The list, updated unchanged, includes 13 individuals and 21 groups and entities subject to the freezing of funds and other financial assets they hold in the EU

In addition, EU operators are prohibited from providing them with funds and economic resources.

As part of the response to terrorism following the 11 September 2001 attacks in the United States, the EU has drawn up a list of individuals, groups and entities involved in terrorist acts subject to restrictive measures.

Member States first drew up the list with the aim of implementing United Nations Security Council Resolution 1373/2001, which was adopted following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, which included the destruction of the Towers Twins in New York , and killed thousands of people, according to the Al-Qaeda organization.

The list is periodically revised, at least every six months, on the basis of information about any new facts and developments relating to the designation.S.

Under EU law, terrorist offenses are acts committed with the intent to seriously intimidate a population, to unduly compel a government or an international organization to perform or refrain from performing an act, to undermine the fundamental political, constitutional, economic or social structures of a country or an international organization.
