Trump trial scheduled for May 2024

The trial of former US President Donald Trump for allegedly illegally withholding hundreds of confidential documents will begin in May next year, the court ruled.

A Florida federal court has scheduled the trial to begin May 20, 2024, a compromise between a request from prosecutors to set the trial for December and a proposal from defense attorneys to schedule it after the presidential election of 2024, which Trump plans to run as the Republican Party nominee.

If the date is correct, it will happen shortly after another Trump trial in New York, in which the former president faces dozens of state charges for falsifying business records in a lawsuit related to paying a bribe to a pornographic actress.

This date also means that the process will not begin before the start of the presidential nomination calendar, in which Trump attempts to return as the Republican nominee for the White House.

Trump could face further trials next year.

This week, Trump revealed he had received a letter informing him that he was the subject of a separate Justice Department investigation into attempts to change the results of the 2020 presidential election.

On Wednesday, a federal judge in Manhattan denied Donald Trump’s request for a new trial or review of damages in the sex abuse case of journalist and author E. Jean Carroll.

This case ended when Trump was ordered to pay Carroll $5 million in damages.

Judge Lewis Kaplan rejected the former president’s motion, who was in Casa Banca between 2017 and 2021, arguing that “the jury did not reach a ‘seriously wrong result’ in this case” and that it decided so because there evidence abounded.

In 2022, Carroll accused Trump of raping her in a large warehouse fitting room, in 1996, a lawsuit that was settled May 9, when the jury found him “responsible” (guilty, according to the vocabulary in civil cases) of sexual abuse and libel.

This year, the current candidate for the Republican nomination had asked for a new trial, claiming the damages were excessive since the jury had not gone so far as to find him responsible for the offense.

Carroll still has a case pending, as Trump defamed her in 2019, damaging her reputation.
