PP wins 33 more seats in the Senate, an absolute majority in the Senate

The People’s Party (PP, right) won an additional 33 seats in the Spanish Senate, giving it an absolute majority in the Upper House with about 80% of the votes counted, thanks to the 116 deputies elected in Sunday’s polls.

These PP representatives are added by regional designation to the 20 senators, who also hold a seat in the Senate Palace hemicycle, and number 136 as of today, three more than those who make up the absolute majority in this institution.

The PSOE, on the other hand, went from 93 elected seats to 76, a loss of 17 compared to the seats it won in 2019.

Far behind, with seven seats, is Left for Independence, which brings together senators from the ERC and EH Bildu, who shared a parliamentary group in the last legislature.

The PNV suffered a serious setback, going from nine senators obtained in the previous election (with one more appointed by the Basque Parliament) to four.

On the other hand, Juntos por Catalunya fell from three elected to one, Agrupação Socialista Gomera retains one, as does the Navarrese UPN, and Grupo Herreña Independente enters the Chamber with another.

The senator elected by the coalition formed by the PSOE, Somar, EUIB and Ara Eivissa, who ran for the Pitiusas Islands, can join the socialist group.

In addition to the 208 senators elected at the ballot box, the territorial chamber has 57 more, appointed by the autonomous parliaments, to reach the 265 representatives in the hemisphere.

Designated senators are renewed in regional elections: Following the May 28 election, a new process began to re-elect the 31 representatives to parliament elected in that election.

Sunday’s elections in Spain had an inconclusive result, with neither of the two main blocs winning an absolute majority.

Conservatives from the People’s Party (PP) won the election, but failed to secure an absolute majority with VOX, according to preliminary results released by the government.

The PP, with 136 deputies, and the VOX, with 33, only managed to add 169 deputies to parliament, requiring seven of the 176 for an absolute majority.

The PSOE, with 122 deputies, and Somar, with 31, had a total of 153 seats in parliament and may have more deputies than the right among the allies of the last legislature.
