Classes suspended at Tehran University of Sciences after protests

Face-to-face classes were suspended on Monday at Iran’s main scientific university, following violent incidents between students and security forces in Tehran on Sunday night.

“Sharif University of Technology has announced that due to recent events and the need to protect students…all classes will be held virtually from Monday. [hoje]”, advanced the Iranian news agency Mehr, quoted by the French AFP.

According to the agency, some 200 students gathered at the Sharif University of Technology on Sunday afternoon for a demonstration in which they chanted hostile chants against the religious system of the Islamic Republic and chanted phrases such as “Woman, life, freedom” or “Students”. I prefer death to humiliation.”

Mehr also adds that the students were protesting against the detention of students during the recent demonstrations caused by the death, on September 16, of the 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, detained three days earlier in Tehran by the so-called customs police for violating the code of dress code, wear the Islamic veil (‘hijab’) without completely covering the hair.

On Sunday night, police fired paintballs, steel balls and tear gas at students, while security forces and plainclothes policemen stood on alert at the university’s north entrance, according to the agency.

To calm the situation, the Minister of Science entered the university to speak with the students and began a dialogue with the forces stationed around the establishment, added the same source.

On Sunday, Iranian President Ebrahim Raissi accused Iran’s “enemies” of “conspiring” against the country and said they had failed in their attempt to manipulate anti-government protests over Mahsa Maini’s death.

“As the Islamic Republic overcame economic problems to become more active in the region and in the world, enemies came into play with the intention of isolating the country. But they failed in this conspiracy,” the Iranian leader said in a statement.

For the Iranian leader, the anti-government demonstrations – protesting Amini’s death – are being used by the West, in particular by the United States, to weaken the Tehran regime.

Demonstrations are being violently suppressed by Iranian security forces who, according to various non-governmental organizations, have killed 92 people since mid-September.
