It is one more episode of the already long list of controversies in which the founder of Tesla is involved and, this time, it is an attempt, on social networks, to achieve peace in Ukraine. And all in less than 280 characters.
It all started with a survey in the form of cheep Posted this Monday. The businessman suggests four measures to achieve peace: “Redo the elections in the annexed regions under the supervision of the UN. Russia leaves if that is the will of the people; formally making Crimea part of Russia has been done since 1783 (until Khrushchev’s mistake); Securing Crimea’s water supply; Ukraine remains neutral.”
At the end of this proposal, two options appear: “Yes” or “No”. But Musk didn’t stop there. Playing the analyst’s skin, he argued that “this is very likely to be the resolution of the war, it’s just a question of how many die by then”, but he also wanted to point out that “another possible, but unlikely, outcome of this conflict is a nuclear war”.
Finally, another addition: Given the reactions to the original survey, the Tesla founder tried a different approach. “Let’s try this then: the will of the peoples living in Donbass and Crimea must decide whether they are part of Russia or Ukraine,” another tweet read. The answer hypotheses are the same: “Yes” or “No”.
And the rest was born from the inevitable life cycle of a cheep from someone with over 107 million followers.
Zelensky’s profile took less than two hours to react in the same way. A tweet that is also a poll: “What does @elonmusk (Elon Musk) like more? Than supporting Ukraine. Than supporting Russia.”
Four hours later, Musk defended himself: “I remain very supportive of Ukraine, but I am convinced that a massive escalation of the war will cause great harm to Ukraine and possibly to the world.”
But earlier, Mykhailo Podolyak, adviser to the President of Ukraine, had also left a proposal that he even called “better”.
“1. Ukraine sees its territories unoccupied. Including the annexation of Crimea. 2. Russia undergoes mandatory demilitarization and denuclearization and can no longer threaten others. 3. War criminals are subject to an international tribunal,” read, but cheep with which he also participated in the discussion.
Kremlin likes this.
On the other side of the barricade, the Kremlin liked what it saw from Musk. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a news conference that it was “very positive that someone like Elon Musk is looking for a peaceful way out of this situation.”
“Compared to many professional diplomats, Musk is still seeking peace. And reaching peace without meeting Russia’s conditions is absolutely impossible,” he added.
Quoted by ReutersPeskov also argued that “there are robots (automatic accounts) to vote in Musk’s poll,” but provided no evidence.
The Blue Bird Verdict
After 24 hours on the billionaire’s proposal, the response from the Twitter community was known: “No” won with 59.1%.
