Kiev woke up this Friday to the sound of several explosions after Ukrainian authorities nationally activated the alert for an airstrike, Reuters reports.
Kiev mayor Vitali Klitschko said fragments of a missile landed near a children’s hospital and urged residents to seek refuge in bomb shelters in the Ukrainian capital.
On social media, Klitschko also said the roof of a residential house was damaged and no injuries were reported.
According to Reuters, citing Ukrainian officials, air defense systems in the country are functioning. The air force announced that Russia launched hypersonic missiles towards the Kiev region.
Melinda Simmons, British ambassador to the Ukrainian capital, reported on the explosions in Kiev in a social media post.
Air raid on Kiev. Shelter at work. It’s noisy out there. Stay safe Kyiv friends.
