Death toll from torrential rains in China rises to 80

The death toll from torrential rains that have battered northern China this month has risen to at least 80, after two more casualties were reported in Weiziping.

Two people were killed and 16 others were missing after a landslide, state broadcaster CCTV reported on Saturday.

A flash flood occurred in Weiziping, south of the city of Xi’An in the central province of Shaanxi, triggering a landslide that “washed away two houses”, CCTV reported, adding that “roads, bridges and the network power lines were damaged.” .

Four of the victims trapped in the landslide were rescued, but two others died.

Emergency management officials warned of the possibility of “several” strong storms hitting the Weiziping region.

“With continued rains, the mountains and soils will become highly saturated, which is likely to lead to more catastrophes, including mountain flash floods and landslides,” they said in a statement.
