Documents seized at Mar-a-Lago: Trump asks the Supreme Court to intervene

The former president made an urgent call to prevent the Ministry of Justice from examining the classified documents seized during the search of his home.

Former President Donald Trump asked the United States Supreme Court on Tuesday to intervene in the case related to the documents seized this summer at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. The Republican billionaire sent an urgent appeal to the high court to prevent the Ministry of Justice from examining a hundred documents marked as “classified”, seized on this occasion.

This resource does not relate to the legality of the spectacular raid carried out in August by the federal police in Mar-a-Lago, and does not address any substantive issues. He is only challenging an appeal court decision that authorized the ministry to examine these documents without waiting for the conclusions of an independent expert, responsible for reviewing the 11,000 seized documents.

The Supreme Court, which was heavily scrutinized by Donald Trump during his tenure, is not required to accept his appeal. Although he has six of the nine Conservative justices, he has already inflicted setbacks on him, including refusing to support him in his post-election crusade.

“Withholding Classified Documents” and “Obstruction of a Federal Investigation”

This new legal battle concerns the White House files. When he left power in January 2021, Donald Trump took entire boxes of documents with him. However, a 1978 law requires any American president to transmit all of his emails, letters, and other business documents to the National Archives.

In January 2020, he finally delivered fifteen boxes to them. However, after examining them, the federal police estimated that he probably had others in his luxurious residence in Mar-a-Lago. FBI agents went there for the first time in June and became convinced that they had not been given all the documents.

On August 8, they carried out an unprecedented search warrant based on a “withholding of classified documents” and “obstruction of a federal investigation” order, seizing another thirty boxes.

Since Donald Trump, who flirts with the idea of running for a new term in 2024, claims to be “persecuted” politically and ensures that the seized documents are personal or declassified. He is also being sued in a civil suit by the New York courts, which accuse him of having manipulated the assets of his group to obtain more advantageous loans or reduce his taxes.
