Slovenia’s parliament on Tuesday approved a legislative proposal that would allow same-sex marriage and adoption, following a ruling by the Constitutional Court, making it the first Eastern European state to do so.
The amendment to the family law was voted in favor by 48 deputies. With another 29 against, the vote still had one abstention.
Slovenia, the result of the implosion of Yugoslavia, is the first of the European states with a regime that claimed communism to promote this reform in Eastern Europe.
A member of the European Union since 2004, this state, with two million inhabitants, joins another 17 from the Old Continent that have already legalized this marriage.
