The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, sent his US counterpart, Joe Biden, a message of condolences for the tragic consequences of the fires in Hawaii, which caused the death of 96 people according to the latest balance.
In a note on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic, it is mentioned that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa “transmitted regret and solidarity to the President of the United States, Joe Biden.”
“The President of the Republic sent his American counterpart, Joe Biden, a message of condolences and solidarity for the tragic consequences caused by the fires in the State of Hawaii,” the text says.
The death toll from the fires that hit the US island of Maui, in the Hawaiian archipelago, has risen to 96, according to data provided this Sunday by local authorities.
Official entities predict that as searches continue in the devastated areas, more victims will be found.
Also in a statement released on Sunday by the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, some descendants of Portuguese who disappeared in the fires on the island of Maui have already been located and Portugal continues to monitor the situation in Hawaii.
In the same statement, “it is not ruled out that there are still missing people.”
Hawaii Gov. Josh Green called the fires “the largest natural disaster Hawaii has ever experienced,” according to CNN, surpassing the 61 confirmed deaths following a tsunami in 1960.
Before Hawaii became a state in 1959, a tsunami in 1946 killed 158 people.
