Pope calls for peace in Ukraine, says gun noise hides attempts at dialogue

Pope Francis on Tuesday reiterated his calls for peace in Ukraine and “in all war-torn areas” where “the sound of weapons obscures attempts at dialogue,” he said during a speech in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican.

In the speech, on the occasion of the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Francis said: “Today we entrust to Mary, who ascends into heaven, the request for peace in Ukraine and in all war-torn regions, of which unfortunately there are so many”.

Francis, who is deeply involved in the struggle for peace in various conflicts and in particular in Ukraine, where he sent Cardinal Matteo Zuppi on a mission, said that “the sound of weapons” did not allow “attempts at dialogue” to be heard.

“The right of force prevails over the force of the law, but let’s not get discouraged, let’s keep hoping and praying that God, who guides history, will listen to us,” he added.

A few days ago, the pope revealed he was thinking of appointing “a permanent representative” to “serve as a bridge” between Russia and Ukraine and announced that his special envoy to mediate the war will travel to Beijing, after having already visited Kiev. , Moscow and Washington.
