Zelensky visits counter-offensive soldiers in Zaporijia. ‘It is important to speak directly to the fighters’

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday visited units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces involved in the counter-offensive at the front of Melitopol in the southern region of Zaporijia, the presidential office said.

Zelensky listened to the unit commanders’ reports on the course of the offensive and discussed with them and the soldiers the challenges they face.

In particular, representatives of the armed forces stressed the need for more radio-electronic devices and air defense systems for the front lines, to counter attacks by enemy fighter jets and drones, the presidential office said.

The military has also asked for more drones, as they wear out quickly in offensive conditions.

For his part, Zelensky requested the systematic recording of requests from the army so that they can be studied by the team of the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and passed on to Ukraine’s foreign allies.

On Monday, the Ukrainian president visited the command posts of several brigades stationed on the front lines in the Donetsk region.

“There is always a general picture, there are reports on every area, on every brigade. But it is important to speak directly to the fighters about the wartime experiences of those on the ground,” Zelensky later wrote on social media.

Since early June, the Ukrainian army has been conducting offensive operations in the east and south to try to recapture areas occupied by Russian-speaking separatist militias and Russian troops, including in the Zaporijia region.
