The chief of staff of the NATO Secretary General defended this Wednesday that Ukraine could cede territory to Russia to facilitate its entry into the Atlantic Alliance, a suggestion already considered unacceptable by the Ukrainian authorities.
“I think one solution could be for Ukraine to give up territory and receive NATO membership in exchange. I’m not saying it should be like this, but it’s a possible solution,” Stian Jenssen told a political forum in Norway.
However, he stressed that Ukraine must decide “when and under what conditions it wants to negotiate.”
“There are essential moves on the issue of Ukraine’s future NATO membership. It is in everyone’s interest that the war does not happen again,” he said.
According to the Norwegian daily VG, Jenssen said Russia “is suffering a lot from a military point of view” and “it seems unrealistic” that it could gain more territory, noting that the question is “what can Ukraine get back”.
However, the Ukrainian authorities already considered the suggestion of the senior official of the Atlantic Alliance unacceptable.
“That a NATO representative is supporting the narrative of a territorial surrender is absolutely unacceptable and supports Russia’s positions,” Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko was quoted as saying by the Ukrinform agency.
