The death toll from an explosion in the Dominican Republic rises to 25

The death toll associated with the explosion on Monday in San Cristóbal, a city in the southern Dominican Republic, rose to 25, the official in charge of the country’s civil protection, Delfin Antonio Rodríguez, reported on Wednesday.

In statements to the SIN news channel, the official said that 25 bodies have been identified, based on information from the Dominican National Health Service.

In the above point of view, the country’s Emergency Operations Center located in the Caribbean reported 11 dead and 59 injured.

Delfin Antonio Rodríguez also announced that the fire resulting from the explosion in the commercial area of ​​San Cristóbal is 90% controlled.

The Dominican President, Luis Abinader, has already expressed his regret over the explosion that took place at 3:10 p.m. local time on Monday (6:10 p.m. Lisbon time), which sparked a fire and a gigantic column of smoke.

“It is a fact that shocked us all, we are very shocked, very sad,” he said, on the sidelines of a Eucharist that was held this Wednesday in tribute to the victims.

The city of San Cristóbal is less than 30 kilometers from the Dominican capital, Santo Domingo, and is the seat of the province of the same name, the fourth most populous in the country, with almost 700,000 of its ten million inhabitants.
