At least five people were killed and 37 injured, including 11 children, in the Russian attack on the town of Chernihiv, in northern Ukraine, this Saturday, Interior Minister Igor Klimenko said through the Telegram application.
The attack took place around noon, when the inner city was particularly busy due to the religious holiday and the large number of citizens attending church services. At least one of the missiles hit a theater directly, according to the minister’s message, reported by the Ukrinform portal.
“All emergency services are working on site. Unfortunately, there are reports of casualties,” the mayor’s office in the northern Ukrainian city said earlier.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is currently on an official visit to Sweden, condemned the attack on his social media, noting that such actions show what it is like to “live next to a terrorist state”.
“A Russian missile hit the heart of Chernigov, a square, a university and a theater. Russia has turned an ordinary Saturday into a day of mourning and loss. There are victims. My condolences to everyone who has lost a loved one (… ) Against this we unite the whole world,” he wrote on his account on the social network X, formerly Twitter.
“I urge the world to stand up against Russian terrorism. Give Ukraine extra tools to protect life. For life to win, Russia must lose this war,” Zelensky underlined.
Chernihiv, located 140 kilometers north of Kiev, has been constantly surrounded by Russian forces since the beginning of the invasion, although the Ukrainian army has managed to contain its attacks and prevent it from falling under enemy control.
