The last night went better than expected for the work to extinguish the forest fire in Tenerife and the weather conditions were not so unfavorable, the Canary Islands Rescue and Emergency Center announced this Sunday.
The emergency services expected a “very complicated” night after Saturday, when there were high temperatures, gusts of wind and low humidity in the 70-kilometer perimeter of the fire, which made it difficult to fight the flames and facilitated the advance of the fire. , especially in the northern part of the island.
The forest fire spreads through 10 municipalities, although evacuations were carried out in 11, with an area of 8,398 hectares within a 70-kilometre perimeter. The number of people evacuated was updated to 12,279, with data provided by police forces and municipalities outside the census, a figure lower than the 26,000 initially advanced and which corresponded to provisional estimates.
During the night, 343 people worked on the ground, including 150 firefighters who, together with the Military Emergency Unit, were in charge of protecting property and homes in the evacuated areas.
In the early hours of the morning, 23 aircraft were involved in the fight against the fire, five of which were seaplanes.
