Trump announces he will not be present at Republican primaries

Former US President Donald Trump confirmed on Sunday that he will not attend the first debate of the Republican presidential primary on Wednesday or any other.

“The public knows who I am and what a successful presidency I’ve had,” Trump wrote on his social media.

“So I don’t do debates,” he added.

Donald Trump’s spokesperson has not clarified whether the former US president plans to boycott all primary debates or just those scheduled.

The former president and former GOP leader has said for months that he saw little benefit in joining his Republican rivals on the podium when they first meet in Milwaukee on Wednesday, given his race lead.

“Why should I allow people with 1 or 2% and 0% to bombard me with questions all night?” said in a June interview with Fox News host Bret Baier, who will serve as moderator.

Trump has also repeatedly criticized Fox, the host of the August 23 primetime event, insisting that it is a “hostile network” that he says will not treat him fairly.
