Political agreement reached between the EU countries on the new package of sanctions against Russia

The member states of the European Union (EU) reached a political agreement on Wednesday on new sanctions on Russia for the invasion of Ukraine, an eighth package that is expected to enter into force on Thursday as a “strong response” to the annexation of territories Ukrainians.

Last Wednesday, the European Commission proposed an eighth package of sanctions against Russia, given the “new escalation” of the Kremlin in its aggression against Ukraine, with the celebration of “fraudulent referendums”, partial mobilizations and the threat of resorting to weapons. nuclear.

The new EU sanctions package includes a cap on Russian oil prices, new trade restrictions to deprive Russia of some €7 billion in revenue, an export ban on more products to deprive the Kremlin of technologies, key for the Russian war machine and an update of the list of persons and entities subject to restrictive measures.

Specifically, the EU added to the individual sanctions list pro-Russian officials in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia.

Brussels also proposed to ban the provision of European services to Russia and to ban EU citizens from sitting on the boards of Russian state-owned companies, arguing that “Russia should not benefit from the knowledge and experience” of Europeans.

This is the eighth sanctions package approved by the EU since Russia invaded Ukraine about seven months ago.

Reacting today to the approval by the ambassadors of the Member States, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, welcomed the ‘green light’, stressing that the EU “has advanced quickly and decisively”.

“We will never accept Putin’s fraudulent referendums or any kind of annexation in Ukraine. We are determined to continue to make the Kremlin [regime russo] payment,” said Ursula von der Leyen.
