The Ukrainian Military Intelligence Service (GUR), a structure of Ukraine’s Defense Ministry, confirmed on Monday that it is actively working to eliminate senior Russian military officials in retaliation for Russia’s February 2022 invasion of the country.
“We will not name the nicknames or the units, but we are talking about the work of the GUR,” said the representative of the structure Andriy Yusov in an interview with the national news agency Ukrinform, when asked about the existence of a unit dedicated to such a mission.
Yusov said that the Russian Federation is “enemy number one” of Ukrainian military intelligence and explained that this structure also acts in other countries, in cooperation with the respective authorities, to make those responsible for Russian military aggression pay for their actions against Ukraine, which, according to the UN, have already caused the deaths of at least 9,000 Ukrainian citizens, though they insist the real numbers will be much higher.
According to the representative of the GUR, the Ukrainian military intelligence services are now actively working towards this goal.
“There are many war criminals and there will be no shortage of work,” Yusov noted, adding that some of these people would not make it in time to surrender to an international court or appear before Ukrainian justice.
The British daily The Times recently published an investigation into the existence of a Ukrainian GUR unit called “Shaman” that is said to be working to eliminate high-ranking Russian military personnel in Russia.
