NGO warns that 250 irregular immigrants are surrounded by fire in Greece

Some 250 irregular immigrants are surrounded by fires on two islands of the Evros River, on the border between Greece and Turkey, an area where the charred bodies of at least 18 immigrants were located on Tuesday, announced a non-governmental organization (NGO).

“We are in contact with two groups of about 250 people in total who are trapped on two islets of Evros,” said Alarm Phone, an organization that receives calls from immigrants in danger through the social network X (formerly Twitter). the sea. Mediterranean.

In its message, the NGO attached a low-quality video that it claims to have received from the detainees, in which the migrants asked for help because the fire was approaching.

The Greek government has already confirmed that at least 18 immigrants were located this Tuesday burned in the Dadia forest, in the Evros region.

The authorities have not yet ruled on another eight bodies located together in the Dadia area, nor on another body found this morning, which is also suspected to correspond to irregular migrants who would have entered Greece from Turkey.

The Evros River, the natural border between the two countries, is one of the gateways to the European Union (EU) used by immigrants and refugees fleeing war and misery in their countries.

High temperatures, coupled with dry weather and winds, have sparked dozens of forest fires across Greece.

For the second day in a row, the fire risk level is “extreme” in several regions, including the Athens area.

Authorities banned public access to the mountains and forests in these regions until at least Wednesday and ordered military patrols.
