A 65-year-old woman has died after a group of 37 tourists were attacked by bees while on holiday on the island of La Mère in French Guiana, in northeastern South America.
In addition to the fatal victim, four people are admitted to the Cayenne hospital in an “absolute state of emergency”, including a four-year-old child, the Guyanese newspaper La Première reports. Another nine people are in a “relative state of emergency”.
After the warning was given, a lifeboat and helicopter took off for the island, with the woman’s death confirmed at the scene.
The group was attacked by African bees, known as killer bees, which are born from crossing different species. Their venom is identical to that of other species, but these bees are more aggressive, which can lead to a large number of stings and even chase an enemy for a mile.
