US President Joe Biden said Wednesday that he was “not surprised” by the news that Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Wagner mercenary group, may have died in a plane crash in Russia.

“I’m not sure what happened, but I’m not surprised,” Biden said, adding that “not a lot happens in Russia that doesn’t have Putin involved” but he doesn’t know “enough to have an answer.”

A commercial plane crashed north of Moscow killing 10 people and the leader of the Wagner mercenary group is on the passenger list, Russian authorities said.

The Russian Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsiya) has launched an investigation into the accident of an Embraer plane that occurred in the Tver region, the entity said in a statement cited by the Tass news agency, adding that the name of Yevgeny Prigozhin was included in the list. of flight passengers.

According to emergency authorities, the plane was carrying three pilots and seven passengers and crashed while making the connection between Moscow and Saint Petersburg, with no survivors reported.

Prigozhin appeared for the first time since the riots on Monday in a video suggesting he had returned to Africa to make Russia “even bigger on every continent.”
