“Celebration of a free people”. Zelensky commemorates 32 years of Ukrainian independence

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine’s “free people” celebrated Independence Day on Thursday as the country faced the 19th month of Russian invasion.

“The great people of the great Ukraine are celebrating a great day today – Independence Day! The celebration of a free people. The strong people’s party. The dignified people’s party. The equal people’s party,” Zelensky said. it’s a statement. Press event on the occasion of the 32 years of the country’s independence.

The Ukrainian president successively thanked the soldiers, their families, teachers, doctors, nurses and all those who help “defend Ukraine” against Russian aggression.

Independence was proclaimed in the Kiev Parliament on August 24, 1991, a few days after the attempted coup in Russia (August 19, 1991).

Poland and Canada were the first countries to recognize Ukraine’s independence on December 2, 1991.

Later that same day, then-Russian President Boris Yeltsin recognized the independence of the Ukrainian nation.

The celebrations of the 32nd anniversary of the Independence of Ukraine will take place as last year, without the usual parade and without crowds in the streets, due to the risk of Russian bombing.

Ukraine was first invaded by Russia in 2014 and in February 2022, in a large-scale military campaign that is still ongoing.

Several heads of state and representatives of countries supporting Ukraine will be present at today’s celebrations.

This year, kyiv’s main avenue is on display with Russian tanks and carcasses of combat vehicles captured by Ukrainian troops.
