Russia on Thursday claimed to have destroyed a Ukrainian army ‘decision center’ after Ukraine denounced a missile attack on the Ukrainian city of Dnipro, about 500 kilometers from Kiev.
“Tonight, Russian forces attacked a decision-making center of the Ukrainian army with long-range and high-precision weapons,” Russian military spokesman Igor Konashenkov said, without specifying the target.
The spokesman said the attack was successful and the target was destroyed, according to the Spanish news agency EFE.
Ukrainian authorities have denounced Russian missile attacks on Dnipro (southeast), which have hit transport infrastructure and private facilities in several economic sectors, including agriculture.
Dnipro is one of Ukraine’s most important industrial cities and serves as a logistical hub for the country’s armed forces due to its good connections and relative proximity to the war front.
The Ukrainian armed forces said in a statement that the offensive continued south of the city of Bakhmut (east) and towards Melitopol (south), both occupied by Russia.
Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar reported on the ongoing fighting in the Kupyan area (East Karkiv region), “where the enemy continues to try to advance”.
“It continues to carry out numerous attacks in an attempt to hit infrastructure” in Ukraine, he said on social media, quoted by local agency Ukrinform.
According to Malyar, Russia “intends to regroup and replace troops” in the Kuyan area.
“Fighting is also taking place in the direction of Bakhmut [região de Donetsk, leste]the enemy is constantly attacking, using armored vehicles and aviation,” he said.
The deputy minister added that Russian troops were trying to stop the Ukrainian advance “at any cost”, but that Ukrainian troops were advancing gradually.
Also this Thursday, Ukraine’s military intelligence announced a lightning operation in Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014, to raise the national flag on the country’s Independence Day.
Information released by Ukraine and Russia about the course of the war that began with the Russian invasion on February 22, 2022 cannot be immediately verified by independent sources.
Since the beginning of the war, Russia has declared the annexation of the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Cherson and Zaporijia.
Kiev is demanding the withdrawal of Russian troops from all over Ukraine, including the Crimean peninsula.
Ukraine has been engaged in a counter-offensive since June, but Ukrainian leaders have admitted slow progress and modest gains.
Western allies have been arming Kiev and imposing sanctions on Russian interests to try to reduce Moscow’s ability to fund the war effort.
