Syrian Aleppo airport suspends operations after Israeli shelling

Syrian authorities said Monday that operations at Aleppo’s international airport were temporarily suspended following a bombing attack blamed on Israel, with no casualties reported so far.

The Syrian Defense Ministry said the attack took place at around 4:30 a.m. (2:30 a.m. Lisbon time), in what it described as an “act of air aggression from the Mediterranean, west of Latakia.”

The military spokesman, quoted by the Ministry, explained that the attack caused “material damage” at the airport, where “operations were suspended”, without commenting on the magnitude of the damage to the facilities.

Israel generally acknowledges the attacks in Syria, arguing that it is acting to prevent the establishment of Iranian bases in the country and the supply of weapons to Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shiite fundamentalist movement, by the Iranian authorities, which support Damascus in the context of the war that began in 2011.
