US says it killed 13 suspected al-Shebab members in southern Somalia

The US military announced the death of 13 suspected members of the Al-Shebab terrorist group in an attack carried out over the weekend in support of Somali troops near the city of Kismayo (southern Somalia).

The United States Command for Africa (Africom) indicated in a statement posted on its website that the attack was carried out “at the request of the federal government of Somalia”, stressing that it was “a collective self-defense bombing” in the vicinity of Seiera.

The US command specified that the bombardment was carried out in the early hours of August 26 “in support of the Somali National Army forces, which were attacked by the terrorist organization”, adding that it estimates so far that “no civilian has been wounded or killed.”

“The command will continue to evaluate the results of this operation and provide additional information, if necessary,” the statement added, stressing that “Al Shebab is the largest and most kinetically active Al Qaeda network in the world.”

In this sense, Africom explained that the group “demonstrated its ability to attack US and allied forces and threaten security interests in the region.”

“Somalia remains critical to the security climate in East Africa,” says the US Africa Command.
