Five railway workers were killed on Wednesday evening when they were picked up by a train on the outskirts of Turin, in northern Italy, various Italian media reported today.
The train, which carried wagons on the line between Milan and Turin, was traveling at a speed of 160 kilometers per hour. Subcontractor personnel were involved in nighttime maintenance work near Brandizzo, the AGI and Ansa news agencies reported.
The railway workers were dragged several hundred meters, indicated the AGI. Two of them survived the crash.

The mayor of Brandizzo, Paolo Bodoni, told AGI that the rescue team described a “frightening scene, with human remains over a distance of 300 meters.” “It’s a huge tragedy,” he said.
“We cannot rule out the possibility that there was a communication error,” the politician added, noting that an investigation is underway.
The company responsible for managing Italy’s rail network expressed its “deep sadness” over what had happened and expressed its condolences to the families of the victims.
