Russia on Friday announced the activation for possible combat use of the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile system, which can carry a dozen nuclear warheads.
In June, Russian President Vladimir Putin had already announced that these new missiles would soon be formally included in the list of options for the armed forces.
Today, according to the Interfax agency, the head of the Russian space agency Roscosmos, Yuri Borisov, confirmed that this system is ready for battle.
Russian forces conducted the first test of this intercontinental ballistic missile in April 2022 and plans to mass-produce it at a plant in Krasnoyarsk.
With a range of between 17,000 and 18,000 kilometers, this missile system is considered an important part of the Russian arsenal, capable of hitting targets across Europe and even reaching the mainland United States.
In February 2022, Moscow launched a military offensive on Ukrainian territory, in what is considered the most serious security crisis in Europe since World War II (1939-1945).
