Giuliani pleads not guilty to distorting Georgia election results

Rudy Giuliani pleaded not guilty in Georgia to charges of attempting, along with former President Donald Trump and others, to illegally overturn the state’s 2020 election results.

In entering the court’s plea of innocence, the former New York mayor and Trump’s attorney also waived his right to appear at a pretrial hearing scheduled for September 6.

Trump and Giuliani are among 19 people charged in a case in which there are 41 indications of a massive conspiracy to thwart the will of Georgian voters who chose Democrat Joe Biden over the Republican nominee for the US presidency.

The thirteen charges against Giuliani, coupled with other legal troubles, mark the dramatic downfall of a man hailed as “America’s mayor” after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has said she wants to try the 19 defendants together, but a legal battle has already begun in a series of lawsuits since the charges were filed on Aug. 14.

Several defendants have filed requests to try to stand trial alone or with a small group of other defendants, while others are seeking to transfer their cases to federal court.

Some want to be tried quickly, under a Georgia court rule calling for their trials to begin in early November, while others are already asking the court to extend deadlines.

Due to the “complexity, breadth and size of the 98-page indictment,” Giuliani asked the judge in Saturday’s petition to give him at least 30 days to file motions after he submitted information about witnesses and evidence from prosecutors. received.

Normally, pre-trial requests must be filed within 10 days of the indictment.
