German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who injured his face while jogging, published a photo wearing an eye patch today, sparking a wave of get well wishes and jokes on social media.
“I’m looking forward to the memes”wrote Scholz, referring to the humorous or satirical re-use of images on the internet alongside the photo in which he appears smiling, wearing a suit and with a black patch over his right eye.
Scholz, 65, suffered a minor facial injury when he fell while jogging on Sunday, forcing him to cancel his appointments for the day.
Scratches are visible around the black visor.
“Thanks for the get well wishes, it seems worse than it is,” he wrote on his official account on the social network X, the new name of Twitter.
In response, he’s received good votes mixed with numerous “memes,” many of which describe him as the “pirate Olaf,” and political commentary.
An hour after publication, the “tweet” had more than 14,000 “likes” and more than 3,000 comments, according to the French agency AFP.
Despite the injury, Scholz, who has been a regular runner for several years, is in good shape, his spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said today.
Scholz intends to fulfill his appointments in the coming days, which include a visit to a motor show in Munich on Tuesday and a speech in parliament on Wednesday.
The head of government is “doing well given the circumstances,” Hebestreit said at a news conference.
“This morning he was in good spirits, although he still looked a bit haggard,” he added.
