The head of European Union diplomacy, Josep Borrell, confirmed on Tuesday that Johan Floderus, a Swedish diplomat who works for the EU, has been imprisoned in Iran for more than 500 days, the AFP agency advances.
“If I may, I want to say something about a specific case, the case of Mr. Floderus. He is a Swedish citizen working for the European Union who has been illegally detained in Iran for more than 500 days,” Borrell said in a statement. to journalists, upon arrival for a meeting in Cádiz, Spain.
“We have been working for the release of Mr. Floderus and we will continue to do so in close contact with the family, respecting his wishes, and certainly with the Swedish government,” stressed the head of EU diplomacy. “We won’t stop until Floderus is released,” he added.
According to the New York Times, the diplomat was arrested on suspicion of espionage while on vacation in Iran. Johan Floderus was arrested at the Tehran airport in April 2022.
Sweden confirmed that the detainee is a Swedish citizen, a diplomat in his 30s.
Iran announced in July last year that it had detained a man on suspicion of espionage, two weeks after an Iranian national was sentenced to life in prison in Sweden for crimes of torture and multiple homicides.
