The US warns North Korea will ‘pay a price’ if it supplies Russia with arms

The White House warned North Korea on Tuesday that it would “pay the price” for any arms shipments to Russia in support of the war in Ukraine.

“This will not give North Korea a good image and they will pay the price in the international community,” National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said when asked at a news conference about “active negotiations” between Moscow and Pyongyang over the supply of armaments.

Washington believes North Korean leader Kim Jong-un intends to travel to Russia to discuss with President Vladimir Putin arms sales from Pyongyang to Moscow ahead of the country’s more than a year-long war. one and a half in Ukraine.

Last week, the chief spokesperson for the United States National Security Council, John Kirby, had already expressed concern about the rapid development of these negotiations over future arms transfers from Pyongyang to Moscow and urged the communist regime to “stop” such negotiations. . discussions.

However, Sullivan admitted that he was in no position to say what kind of weapons Pyongyang would supply to Russia.

“That remains an open question, what kind of material and the quality of material that can be provided,” he said.

But he added: “It says a lot about Russia that it should turn to a country like North Korea to bolster its defense capabilities.”.

In particular, Pyongyang will be able to supply ammunition for artillery, but also raw materials for the Russian defense industry.

Kim Jong-un will travel aboard an armored train to Vladivostok, on Russia’s east coast, later this month to meet with Putin, according to the US daily The New York Times.

Vladivostok will host the 8th Eastern Economic Forum hosted by the Kremlin between September 10 and 13.

US President Joe Biden will take advantage of the summit of the leaders of the G20 (19 largest economies in the world and the European Union) in India this weekend to reiterate the United States’ support for Ukraine “for the time necessary”, said Jake Sullivan.
