White House says North Korea ‘will pay a price’ if it supplies Russia with weapons

The White House warned North Korea on Tuesday that it would “pay the price” for any arms supplies to Russia to support its war in Ukraine.

“This will not give North Korea a good image and will pay the price in the international community,” said National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, when asked at a news conference about “active negotiations” between Moscow and Pyongyang over the supply of weapons.

Washington believes that the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, intends to travel to Russia to discuss with the president, Vladimir Putin, the sale of arms from Pyongyang to Moscow, for the war that the country has been waging for more than a year and medium in Ukraine.

Last week, the main spokesman for the National Security Council of the United States, John Kirby, had already expressed his alarm at the rapid evolution of these negotiations on future arms deliveries from Pyongyang to Moscow and had urged the communist regime to “put an end to to such discussions.

Sullivan admitted, however, that he was not in a position to say what kind of weapons Pyongyang would supply to Russia.

“The question of what type of material and of what quality can be supplied remains open,” he said.

But, he added, “it says a lot about Russia that it has to turn to a country like North Korea to bolster its defense capabilities.”

In particular, Pyongyang will be able to supply ammunition for artillery, as well as raw materials for the Russian defense industry.

According to the American newspaper The New York Times, Kim Jong-un will travel to Vladivostok, on Russia’s east coast, aboard an armored train later this month, to meet Putin.

Vladivostok will host, between September 10 and 13, the VIII Eastern Economic Forum, organized by the Kremlin (Russian Presidency).

The US president, Joe Biden, will take advantage of the summit of the leaders of the G20 (the 19 largest economies in the world and the European Union), in India, next weekend, to reiterate the support of the United States for Ukraine “during the time necessary,” said Jake Sullivan.

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a military offensive in Ukraine that caused, according to UN data, the worst refugee crisis in Europe since World War II (1939-1945) and in the last 18 months caused a high number of refugees. of victims. not only military but also civilians, impossible to count while the conflict unfolds.

The invasion – justified by Putin with the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security – was condemned by the international community in general, which has responded by sending weapons to Ukraine and imposing political and economic sanctions on Russia.
