A Russian drone strike in southern Ukraine’s Odessa region killed one person, local governor Oleg Kiper said on Wednesday, adding that port and agricultural infrastructure were damaged.
Russian troops “attacked the Izmail district in the Odessa region with drones” for “nearly three hours,” Kiper said on the Telegram messaging platform.
“Unfortunately, one person has died,” he said, indicating that the victim was a farm worker.
The river port of Izmail on the Danube has become one of the main outflow routes for Ukrainian agricultural products since Moscow ended the grain deal in July, allowing Ukraine to export freely across the Black Sea.
Ports and other vital maritime trade platforms are located in the southern regions of Odessa and Mykolaiv, where Russia is stepping up attacks following the end of the agreement.
On Monday, Ukrainian air defenses shot down 17 Russian drones in the Izmail district and the wreckage fell into the Danube.
The following day, Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis denounced attacks “very, very close” to his country, which is a member of NATO.
In addition, the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv was the target of a combined Russian attack with cruise missiles and ballistic missiles on Tuesday night, the head of the military government, Sergei Popko, wrote in Telegram.
“All targets in the direction of the capital were destroyed by air defenses,” Popko assured. According to initial information, “there are no casualties or destruction in Kiev,” he stressed.
