Two attackers opened fire on Monday, September 8, a Ramot district in the eastern part of Jerusalem annexed by Israel, killing several people and many wounds. This attack, controlled by the Israeli authorities, has been one of the most mortal in the city since the beginning of the war in Gaza in October 2023.
Reinforcements have been deployed on the site and more widely in the region, while the roads have been closed by safety measure.
• Six dead and nine injured
According to the Israeli police, two attackers arrived by car and opened fire at a bus stop at Ramot’s crossroads.
Israeli rescuers have identified six victims. “A man of around 50” and “three men in his thirty years,” said Magen David Adom, the Israeli equivalent of the Red Cross. The death of a woman and another man were later noted at the Shaaré Tzedek hospital in Jerusalem, according to another press release.
To this deadly evaluation the other nine injured people are added, including six seriously, Magen David Adom said.
“It was a very difficult scene,” said Fadi Dekoid, a nurse, in a Magen David Adom statement. “The injured were lying on the road and the sidewalk near a bus stop, some of them were unconscious.”
• The two Palestinian “neutralized” attackers
Present at the attack scene, “a security guard and a civilian immediately reacted, took reprisals and neutralized the attackers,” said a police statement, added that “their deaths were confirmed.”
The Israeli Prime Minister’s office said Benjamin Netanyahu was celebrating a “security services” meeting, after having personally presented at the tragedy scene.
The Israeli army also said that their forces “sought suspects” in the attack zone and surrounded Palestinian villages in the Ramallah region in a occupied West Bank.
Hamas, at war with Israel in the Gaza Strip, praised the attack saying that the authors were Palestinians. “We affirm that this operation is a natural response to the crimes of the occupation and the genocide that leads our people,” said the Palestinian Islamist movement in a press release.
• An “condemned” attack against the international
In X, President Emmanuel Macron said that “condemning the attack” that has just occurred in Jerusalem, sending his “more sincere condolences to the families of the victims and all Israeli people.”
“The spiral of violence must end. Only a political solution will allow the return of peace and stability for all in the region,” he said.
The German diplomacy head criticized a “loose terrorist attack.” “I am deeply surprised by the loose terrorist attack in Jerusalem. My thoughts are with the relatives of the victims,” Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul wrote.
The hope of a high fire between Israel and Palestinian Hamas seems increasingly distant, while the humanitarian and health crisis is getting worse every day in Gaza’s strip.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced an extension of military operations on Sunday in Gaza and its surroundings, whose objective declared is to take control of the city. During the day, the Israeli army still asked the population to evacuate the southwest of the city in advance of an upcoming bombing in a building.
