A Russian drone strike in the Odessa region of southern Ukraine killed one person, local governor Oleg Kiper said on Wednesday, adding that port and agricultural infrastructure had been damaged.
Russian forces “struck the Izmail district in the Odessa region with drones” for “almost three hours,” Kiper said on the Telegram messaging platform.
“Unfortunately, one person has died,” he said, indicating the victim was a farm worker.
The Danube river port of Izmail has become one of the main outlet routes for Ukrainian agricultural products since Moscow ended a grain deal in July that allowed Ukraine to export freely across the Black Sea.
Ports and other vital platforms for maritime trade are located in the southern regions of Odessa and Mykolaiv, where Russia is stepping up attacks following the end of the deal.
On Monday, Ukrainian air defenses shot down 17 Russian drones in the Izmail district and the wreckage fell into the Danube.
The next day, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis denounced attacks “very, very close” to his country, a NATO member.
In addition, the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, was targeted, overnight on Tuesday, by a combined Russian attack, with cruise missiles and ballistic missiles, the head of the military administration, Sergei Popko, wrote on Telegram.
“All targets in the direction of the capital were destroyed by air defenses,” Popko said. According to the first information, “there are no victims or destruction in kyiv,” he stressed.
