Penalty for non-compliance. The Government believes that Nigeria makes “every effort” to bring gas to Portugal

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho, said Thursday in Paris that Portugal believes that Nigeria is making “every effort” to deliver the gas to which it has committed and that contracts of this type provide for “sanctions and deadlines”.

“The commitments are of a commercial nature and the contracts have their clauses that foresee sanctions and deadlines, different elements that are part of a relationship of this nature. Portugal has a diverse set of suppliers and we believe that, on the Nigerian side, everything possible will be done to keep its word”, said the minister questioned by journalists.

The official thus commented on the lack of four deliveries of gas from Nigeria to Portugal, reported today by the Jornal de Negócios. This failure even led the Secretary of State for Energy, João Galamba, to travel to this African country to guarantee the promised deliveries to Portugal.

The Portuguese Foreign Minister is in Paris to visit UNESCO, the Louvre Museum and for a bilateral meeting with his French counterpart, Catherine Colonna, on Friday.
