“A united continent”. European Political Community condemns aggression against Ukraine

French President Emmanuel Macron said Thursday night that the European Political Community had sent a message of “unity” in the face of Russian aggression against Ukraine.

“We show the unity of 44 European countries, which very clearly expressed their condemnation of Russian aggression and their support for Ukraine,” said Emmanuel Macron, considering that “this is very valuable, because sometimes there are doubts about the division of Europe” .

“We gave a message of unity all together,” Macron said the day leaders from across the European continent met in Prague, at the launch summit of the European Political Community.

This new “informal platform” brings together 17 other countries besides the members of the European Union, including Ukraine or Turkey, as well as all the Balkan countries, Iceland. But also Azerbaijan and Armenia, which also held a bilateral meeting, after the tension on the borders of both countries has intensified in recent weeks.

They all sat at the same table, in an informal meeting, to discuss issues of common interest and convey a message of unity in the European geopolitical space.

In the end, the French president, who was the driving force behind the initiative, referred to the points of convergence between all of them, affirming that the objective of the European Political Community is to guarantee the security, stability and prosperity of the countries of the whole European continent.

French President Emmanuel Macron says the 44 have found points of “convergence in key areas” such as “the protection of essential infrastructure”.

“We have infrastructure that makes us vulnerable. Essential infrastructure such as pipelines, cables, [ou] satellites We need a European strategy to protect them. It is a common policy in some aspects, which is not of the European Union, but of all the Sovereign States that were around the table”, he defended, also pointing out “another common point” that has to do with the particularity of practically all the European countries have suffered cyberattacks.

“Some from Iran: Albania, a few weeks ago. Others from Russia: several Baltic countries. And, I think I can tell, a lot of us over the years. That is why we have a common intergovernmental strategy in the fight against cybercrime, but also on propaganda and disinformation it is a very useful element on which we want to advance, ”he said.

Macron revealed that they all agreed to support Ukraine, “in this format [de 44 países]”, arguing that “we Europeans must contribute to a resilience fund for Ukraine, for the armed forces and civil society, in the post-war period”.

The French president also spoke of a coordinated energy strategy across the continent, pointing to the fact that Azerbaijan and Norway are gas producers and can contribute to the energy “independence” of the continent.

In the field of educational policy, Macron revealed one of the “ideas” that was debated, which seems to be inspired by the Erasmus program, “for young people from [todo o] continent”.

“We need to strengthen cooperation between our Universities, between our educational policies, to allow our young people to have a European culture beyond borders”, he defended.
