The Council of the European Union (EU) signed this Friday an agreement with the Government of Albania that will allow joint operations to be organized between the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) and the coast guard of that country.
In a statement, the Council of the EU announced the signing of this agreement with Tirana, which “will allow the organization of joint operations and the deployment of Frontex border management teams in Albania.”
In the note, Brussels warns that any intervention by Frontex in Albanian waters is subject to the country’s legislation, as agreed with the 27.
According to the Spanish Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska Gómez (Spain will hold the presidency of the EU Council during the second half of this year), cited in the note, “crime at border crossings and immigration management are important challenges for the countries of the Union and their closest neighbors”.
Since 2019, Frontex has expanded its intervention through bilateral agreements between the EU and neighboring countries to assist in border management for the territory of the European continent.
