Kiev this Saturday criticized the G20 leaders’ statement on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which denounced the use of force to gain territorial gains but refrained from directly criticizing the Russians.
“Ukraine is grateful to the partners who tried to include strong language in the text. At the same time, the Group of 20 has nothing to be proud of when it comes to Russian aggression against Ukraine,” said Oleg Nikolenko, spokesperson for Ukraine. voice of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Nikolenko published a photo of part of the statement, issued in red, changing “the war in Ukraine” to “the war against Ukraine” and adding references to Russia.
The document states that “all states” must refrain from the threat or use of force in pursuit of territorial acquisition contrary to the territorial integrity, sovereignty or political independence of any state.
No explicit reference was made to Russia, unlike what happened last year in a G20 statement in Bali, which cited a UN resolution condemning “in the strongest terms the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine.”
“It is clear that Ukraine’s participation (in the meeting) will allow participants to better understand the situation,” Nikolenko said.
